Brood War introduced several new features along with balance updates and new army units to each of the three races that made for more dynamic gameplay. StarCraft did not begin to blossom into the esports juggernaut that it eventually became until the release of its first expansion, StarCraft: Brood War, in 1999. In a tournament setting, matches are typically played in a best of three or best of five format. If, for instance, a player is facing down a massive army after their own army has been eradicated, and their economy or ability to produce army units is crippled, they may see no path to victory and concede instead of drawing a lost cause out for several minutes. A scenario in which a player might concede before they have technically lost is to avoid dragging out an inevitable loss. Typically, the player on the losing side will call вЂњgood game,вЂќ or вЂњggвЂќ to concede long before their opponent has picked off every one of their buildings. The game is won when all major enemy structures are wiped out. Professional players are capable of performing hundreds of discrete actions per minute (APM).

Performing all of the actions necessary to succeed in StarCraft at the professional level requires a high degree of manual dexterity. A match of StarCraft is an intricate dance of reading the opponentвЂ™s moves, preparing strategies, thinking tactically, and also efficiently managing resources. Players start the match with only a primary structure for a base and a few workers capable of building structures and harvesting the gameвЂ™s two primary resources: minerals and vespene gas.ДЇrom there the players race to gather resources, build up their bases, train their armies, and expand their territory around the map. Matches begin on a battlefield map that is determined ahead of time. For instance, the Zerg race excels at quickly producing large, resource-cheap but more fragile armies in large bursts. StarCraft is a real-time strategy game that revolves around managing an in-game economy of resources in order to build a base and train armies with which to battle the other player. As of November 3, 2017, StarCraft IIвЂ™ s competitive multiplayer mode is free-to-play.Дespite the complex nature of the game, especially to first time viewers, StarCraft II continues to be a worldwide hit. To date, Wings of Liberty alone has sold more than six million copies. Two expansion packs titled Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void were released in 20 respectively that added more depth and story to theВ Zerg and Protoss sides.
